The 50 State Quarters Program

The United States Mint 50 State Quarters Program was started in 1999 to produce a series of 50 quarter dollar coins with special designs honoring each state in the order of their entrance into statehood. Five unique designs (one per state) will be issued each year up through 2008. The obverse side, featuring George Washington, was modified slightly to include wording previously on the reverse. The modification was performed by Mint Sculptor-Engraver William Cousins, whose initials appear at the base of Washington's neck adjacent to those of the original designer, John Flanagan. Each state theme is submitted by the governor of the state, usually after a competition is held to solicit designs from the general public. Final designs are then created by mint personnel. State quarters for circulation are struck at the Philadelphia and Denver mints. Proof coins are struck at the San Francisco mint.
