$20 Gold Liberty Coronet Double Eagles - 1850 to 1907

The largest denomination of all regular issue U.S. coins, the $20 gold piece was authorized in 1849. The 1849 Liberty Double Eagle is unique, with only one example minted, and now it resides at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. The next rarest date is the 1884, however it is overshadowed by an extremely rare version of the 1861 minting. Some of these coins contained a modified reverse design by Anthony C. Paquet which was withdrawn soon after introduction.

Designer James B. Longacre; weight 33.436 grams; composition: .900 gold, .100 copper; diameter 34 mm; reeded edge. Net weight, .96750 oz. of pure gold.
