$20 St. Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (1907-1933)

Arguably one of the most beautiful U.S. coins ever minted. Designed by Augustus St. Gaudens, the first pieces struck in 1907 featured very high relief, and the date was in Roman numerals; MCMVII (shown at left). The fields were deeply convex and sloped up to the rim, creating a knife-like edge. The original design proved difficult to strike well and the design was flattened later in 1907, with the Roman numerals replaced by numbers.

Designer Augustus St. Gaudens; weight 33.436 grams; composition: .900 gold, .100 copper; diameter 34 mm; smooth edge with raised letters: E. PLURIBUS UNUM. Net weight, .96750 oz. of pure gold.
